335i Intercooler
When you create extended higher boost condition or hard acceleration run conditions, the engine will be affected by more heat loading than normal. The eventual outcome is a condition whereby your BMW 335i performance will eventually falter.
Active Autowerke has seen this after simulating multiple back to back runs on the dynometer where the engine heat soaks and the factory intercooler cannot handle the excess heat adequately. As a result, the Intercooler overloads and the intake air charge is not adequately cooled properly. When you have conditions like this, it seems logical that a larger intercooler over the factory unit would be a good solution. These are the conditions that a reworked intercooler must address. At the heart of the FMIC, they feature a 3” thick bar and plate design that is capable of supporting up to 750hp. They also provide replacement piping for pre and post-intercooler piping. The 335i intercooler is measured at 4” x 6” x 22” which is a substantial upgrade from the stock unit. We opted for this size to maximize surface area while eliminating the cutting required for the end-user to install the intercooler. Their FMIC posted a staggering 83% efficiency @6800 RPM whereas the stock unit was 58%. In addition to this FMIC, they have also engineered an oil-cooling unit that is mounted on the FMIC to alleviate all notions of the N54 stock oil cooling not being sufficient under heavy driving. So for the price of the competition you also get an oil-cooling unit on top of an upgraded intercooler. With the growing need to provide qualitative data, cp-e™ has made it a priority to do vigorous testing on our FMIC and provide the public with a full synopsis of how the FMIC performs under various driving conditions. To capture this information, they used the BlackBox logging utility. It’s a telemetry logging system that uses both a 3D accelerometer and a GPS to indicate vehicle speed and position over time. Additionally, the system features 8 analog input channels which have been populated with a series of temperature and pressure sensors so you can see exactly how the intercooler performs under real conditions! Below are the main reasons we feel replacement of the stock piping is in order: * Stock system has an accordion hose at the inlet. This hose will create turbulence because of the ribbed design. o ETS Solution- Extend the inlet tube to reach the stock turbo outlet pipe and use a straight, smooth silicone coupler. * 90deg bend at the intercooler outlet is restrictive to flow. o ETS Solution- Split the sharp 90deg bend up into a 60deg and a 30deg bend. This still makes a 90deg turn, but is not as sharp as the stock 90deg hose. This allows for better airflow post intercooler. * Plastic Pipe has restrictive dimples protruding into the airstream. o ETS Solution- Use a Stainless Steel mandrel bent pipe that is uniform inner diameter throughout it's length improves flow as well. Performance: Turbonetics and its high performance intercooler brand Spearco now
offers bolt-on intercooler upgrades for the 2007-up 335i coupes and sedans. BMW
owners can now enjoy the benefits of increased flow and more efficient air to
help dramatically lower intake air temperatures to increase power. By using a
massive 6” thick W.A.V.E. Technology core, the Spearco front mount intercooler
dropped charge air temperatures on average of 125 degrees on the twin turbo
vehicle. In addition to lower intake air temperatures, the pressure of air
exiting the intercooler compared to the pressure entering the unit was only an
amazing 0.20 psi drop. The stock unit has over one pound of pressure loss/drop
due to the factory unit’s lack of efficiency and limited size. When the stock
unit is upgraded to the Spearco you will have less heat and more power due to
the ability to quickly and efficiently move the pressurized air through the
